While I don't doubt that under the correct, supervised circumstances meeting an opposum can probably be a nice experience. Perhaps even be considered a cute experience. However when you pop outside to sit on the porch steps after 10 at night for a breath of fresh air and hear an almost inaudible stirring beneath the steps, only to see slowly emerge a huge grey furry rat like creature with the beadest eyes, it's not quite an ideal first meeting. He didn't even seemed scared when I leapt up and shuddered loudly in horror, but merely carried on slowly shuffling about and then, in no apparent rush, wandered off to the neighbors yard.
My goodness, the wildlife! We were only... lets see... 5 blocks east of here and living on the main drag before but it's like another world. Racoons cheepering in the tree at night, the odd cardinal, squirrels and an unidentified shouting bird that flies around, a pack of untouchable roaming stray cats, oh and cicadas and the blissful chirping of crickets all summer long. The last I so enjoy because we had no nearby trees at the apartment. Only the roar of traffic and men at the bar downstairs spitting and yelling and singing at the occaisional Portuguese karaoke night.
But still, an oppossum? Bizarre.
